Maryland football leads for edge target ahead of official visit

Maryland will welcome their next batch of official visitors to campus beginning Thursday as head coach Mike Locksley and his staff look to tack onto their current seven-man recruiting class in the 2025 cycle. With a long list of local and Florida targets making their way to campus, a newer target will make his way to College Park on Thursday as Avon Old Farms (CT) defensive end Dante Recker gives Maryland a return visit.

Recker, a 6-foot-6, 255-pound defensive end, picked up the offer from Maryland after visiting for a spring practice back on April 11 as the defensive staff has ramped up their efforts since then. After safeties coach Zac Spavital initially led the way, defensive line coach Brian Williams has picked up efforts since then while defensive GA David Brownlee has made himself a bigger presence among Maryland’s regional defensive targets.

“I talked to Spav the most at first. He’s been awesome, BWill is the man. [David] Brownlee and I probably talk the most about random stuff, but I keep in touch with all of them,” Recker told IBG.

Temple, Akron, Fordham, UConn and Bowling Green are among the schools who have offered, but Maryland is the first of three visits with plans to visit Virginia on June 18 then Rice on June 21. Still, it’s Maryland who holds a convincing lead heading into his three visits.

“They’re my number one for sure. I love everything about them,” Recker added. “It’s Big Ten football. I do really love the coaches and that’s the main thing. They’re freaking awesome. Big Ten football doesn’t get much better than that and it’s a pretty good education.”

Whether Recker pulls the trigger on a decision this weekend remains to be seen, but it’s not a development the emerging lineman sees coming to fruition just yet.

“I’d still want to be as close to 100% as I can be,” he said. “I just want to see Maryland then the other two schools, see these campuses then go from there. I do think I’ll make a decision before my senior year in August.”

Dante Recker is unrated by On3 while he transitions from Peters Township (PA) to Avon Old Farms (CT) for a post-grad year ahead of the 2024 season.
