Maryland men’s basketball has a quartet of former stars now in the NBA, but it was former Maryland wing Aaron Wiggins who is coming off a career night.
Wiggins posted 41 points and 14 rebounds in Saturday’s win vs. Sacramento, both career-highs, while finishing with a game-high +31 plus-minus. Wiggins also poured in six threes, also a career high, in addition to three assists in 40 minutes.
“Somewhere in my man cave, for sure,” Wiggins said postgame when asked where the game ball from his career night would be kept.
Saturday marked Wiggins’ second game this season scoring 20 or more points, though he’s shot over 50% from the floor in 11 of his last 15 games. Wiggins is now the lone Terp averaging double-figures in the NBA, averaging ten points and 3.6 rebounds in just over 21 minutes of action per game.
“It feels good. I don’t know, man. It’s an awesome feeling. The guys that I’m with makes it that much more awesome because these guys truly support one another and love one another. Awesome feeling, feels good,” Wiggins added.
Wiggins, who is in year one of a five-year, $47 million deal, helped push the Thunder 0.5 games back from the league’s best record while Oklahoma City comfortably leads the Western Conference standing at 38-9.
They weren’t the only Terps in action in the game, though Wiggins was the lone to come out on top after Kings guard Kevin Huerter posted three points in eight minutes, while Alex Len was one of two Kings to not play due to coach’s decision.
Wiggins joins Jalen Smith (Chicago), Kevin Huerter (Sacramento) and Alex Len (Sacramento) in the league while Bruno Fernando, who signed with Toronto in the offseason, made the trip across the Atlantic to sign a two-year deal with Real Madrid last month.
