Maryland football has their first portal commitment along the offensive line after On3 reported former Akron OT Jayvin James has signed with the program. James' commitment has been expected through the week as Maryland restocks the trenches.
James, a 6-foot-4, 290-pound tackle originally out of Blanche Ely (FL), committed to Maryland over Illinois after taking visits last week.
“It was great, man. Definitely cool seeing everything out there and think they fit what I want,” James told IBG following the visit. “There’s a lot of great things out there and it’s definitely a great spot for me.”
James started in nine games and appeared in all 12 for a Zips’ team that finished 4-8 (3-5) in 2024, but with three years of eligibility left, the portal tackle is an early candidate to make the leap into Power Four football. Cincinnati, Georgia State, Maryland and USF were among the other schools to jump into the mix for the high-ceiling tackle while Louisville showed interest, but the Terps were the first school to host him. James visited Maryland on Dec. 12 and Illinois on Dec. 16 before wrapping up his decision.
“Maryland was very aggressive in their recruiting and I looked into them a little bit,” James said at the time. “They also said a lot of great things, a lot of things about what they see in me and how they fit my goals and things that I can reach. I definitely appreciate them reaching out the way they did and it seems like it’s a good fit.”
James has three years of eligibility left and will arrive at Maryland in January.
