Maryland assistant Kevin Sumlin is not expected to return to Maryland for a third season, multiple sources tell IBG. Football Scoop first publicly reported the news, though IBG reported the development for subscribers on Feb. 4.
Sumlin served as Maryland’s associate head coach, co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach for the last two seasons. He joined the program after serving as the head coach and general manager of the USFL team Houston Gamblers in 2022.
“My relationship with Kevin goes back over 25 years,” head coach Mike Locksley said at the time of Sumlin’s hire.
He previously served as the head coach at Arizona, Texas A&M and Houston and coached players like Johnny Manziel among others.
His son, Jackson, is expected to remain with the program where he’ll be able to serve as an assistant in the tight end room.
Sumlin compiled a 86-43 record during his time with the both the Cougars and Aggies, but finished just 9-20 (4-19) in three seasons as the head coach at Arizona. Sumlin was a finalist for the Paul “Bear” Bryant National Coach of the Year Award back in 2009, while his offenses eclipsed 400 yards of total offense every season he was head coach.
Under Sumlin, the tight end room has seen ample roster turnover with Rico Walker (Auburn), Dylan Wade (UCF), Preston Howard (Auburn), Corey Dyches (Cal) and Leron Husbands (Tulane) all departing from the program, but Maryland will have a big piece to work with at the position in 2025 as former Georgia State TE Dorian Fleming arrived in College Park last month.
Maryland could fill the role internally depending how the coaching carousel shakes out.
