Billy Edwards transfers to one of Maryland football's 2025 opponents

Maryland football will officially suit up against their former starting quarterback.

Billy Edwards Jr. will spend his final season of eligibility in Madison, Wisconsin after committing to head coach Luke Fickell and the Badgers on Monday night coming off his weekend official visit. Edwards’ visit to Michigan originally slated for Monday was canceled despite the Wolverines drawing all the buzz prior to him entering the transfer portal. Edwards instead took a visit to Virginia on Monday with a chance to close out his college career closer to home before opting to stick within the Big Ten. Despite the change in landing spot among his Big Ten suitors, it doesn’t change the fact that Maryland will now face its former starting quarterback.

Edwards’ finalized decision confirms that he will now likely face Maryland when the Terps travel to Madison to face the Badgers on Sept. 20. While it marks the first matchup since 2022 between the two teams, it will mark the first time that Maryland has faced its former quarterback, but far from the first time they’ve faced a former player. And in the transfer portal era, it’s unlikely this will be the last time they’ll square off against a familiar face. Edwards became the Badgers' second commitment after former San Diego St. QB Danny O'Neil announced on Monday morning.

Edwards completed 65% of his passes and threw for over 2,800 yards and 15 touchdowns to nine seasons in his first and only season as Maryland’s starting quarterback. He finished third in the Big Ten in completions (273) and set the program record with 55 passing attempts in the comeback win vs. USC, while he also threw for at least 200 yards in the first ten games of the season, the longest streak of any Big Ten quarterback.

As for Maryland, all eyes are now on former blue-chip and current signee Malik Washington to compete for the newly-vacant starting quarterback gig while head coach Mike Locksley and the staff are expected to scour the transfer portal for a veteran.
