Details of Maryland football’s two new assistants, Pep Hamilton and Andre Powell, were provided to Inside the Black and Gold on Friday afternoon via a university records request.
Hamilton signed a three-year deal through Dec. 31, 2027 with a $1 million salary beginning in 2025 with a $250,000 increase each season. Contingent on Maryland meeting minimum APR score, Hamilton is also eligible to receive a one-time $250,000 payment on both Feb. 16, 2026 and Feb. 16., 2027 if he remains an assistant coach. If Hamilton leaves Maryland prior to the end of the 2026 season, he owes $100,000 with a head coaching position the exception.
Hamilton joined the program as the new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, replacing Josh Gattis for the coordinator job while he takes over the quarterback title filled by head coach Mike Locksley over the last two seasons. He most recently coached in college with Michigan back in 2017 for two seasons before stints with the Texans and Chargers where he became Houston’s offensive coordinator in 2022. His son, Jackson Hamilton, is also among the eleven early enrollees in College Park as he rounds out a six-man quarterback room in 2025.
“Pep is one of the most well-respected offensive minds in our business and his addition to the Maryland football family is significant,” Locksley said at the time of release. “Pep has consistently developed players over his career, succeeding at all levels and always bringing out the best in everyone he works with. Additionally, Pep and I share many of the same core values and offensive philosophies, which will allow for a smooth transition.”
Powell signed a two-year deal through Jan. 31, 2027 with a $250,000 salary as he becomes the program’s new special teams coordinator, taking over a unit that was split between assistant James Thomas and analyst Ron Zook through the 2024 season.
This marks Powell’s second stint in College Park after coaching the running backs in 2011 before taking over as special teams coordinator in 2012, assuming the title for the next three seasons. The 2012 season in College Park marked the first of 13 consecutive seasons that Powell carried the special teams coordinator title, while he also produced former Lou Groza Award winner Brad Craddock in 2014.
