Derik Queen headlines All-Big Ten honors for Maryland men's basketball

Writer: Ahmed GhafirAhmed Ghafir

Ahead of the start of the 2025 Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday and Maryland men’s basketball in action on Friday night, the Big Ten announced its 2024-25 regular season accolades with Derik Queen leading the way:

Derik Queen headlines accolades

As many expected to down the stretch, Derik Queen was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year on Tuesday in addition to first-team All-Big Ten (coaches) and second-team All-Big Ten (media). The accolades make Queen the first freshman Terp since Melo Trimble to be named first-team all-conference, while he joins Buck Williams and Joe Smith as the only players in program history to be named Freshman of the Year.

Queen joined Kasparas Jakucionis (Illinois), Jase Richardson (Michigan State), Ace Bailey (Rutgers) and Dylan Harper (Rutgers) on the All-Freshman Team with Queen the lone consensus selection by the coaches.

Queen leads Maryland in scoring, averaging 15.7 per game and second on the team in rebounds with 9.2. His 9.2 rebounds per game mark is the fourth-best in the Big Ten. Queen scored a season-high 29 points against Rutgers on Feb. 9, and has scored 20 points or more in ten games this season. His 478 points this season ranks as the third-most for a freshman in program history, while he’s posted double figures in rebounds in 14 games, and is second on the team with 12 double-doubles. Queen is one of only two Division I players ranking in the top two on his team in points, total rebounds, assists, steals and blocks. Queen is on pace to be the second Maryland player this century to be top two in each category in a single season, with the other being Aaron Wiggins during the 2020-21 season.

All-Big Ten honors for pair of starters

Ja’Kobi Gillespie was named a third-team All-Big Ten selection by both the coaches and media. Gillespie, who leads the Big Ten in made threes per game (2.5), sits third all-time at Maryland in single-season made three-pointers (76) while his 41.5% three-point shooting percentage ranks second-best all-time (min. 75 made).

Julian Reese named honorable mention by both the coaches and media, though was also omitted from the All-Big Ten Defensive Team in arguably the biggest snub.

Reese ranks first all-time in career offensive rebounds (350) – while leading the conference this season – and ranks top-five in the record books in four more categories as he closes the book on his time at Maryland. His 9.3 rebounds per game as a senior also rank second in the Big Ten, averaging 0.1 more than Queen, while 13 of his 35 career double-doubles came during the 2024-25 season.

Selton Miguel, who was snubbed from all-conference recognition, was Maryland’s selection for the sportsmanship award.
