DL Lavon Johnson departing Maryland football, set to re-enter the transfer portal

After departing then returning, junior defensive lineman Lavon Johnson will now reenter the transfer portal when the spring window begins next week.
Johnson joins WR Braeden Wisloski as the second Terp to depart the program ahead of the spring transfer portal window.
“After long talks and conversations with my family I have decided that I will re-enter my name into the transfer portal [on] April 16,” he posted on X.
Johnson entered the transfer portal during the winter window back on Dec. 24 before withdrawing two days later, signifying a notable offseason with for head coach Mike Locksley.
After appearing in six games in 2023, Johnson became a bigger piece along the defensive line rotation in 2024 where he totaled 14 tackles and 0.5 TFLs in eight games he was available. Across two seasons, Johnson has 19 total tackles,1.5 TFLs and one sack as he steps into the role left vacant by Jordan Phillips, who announced he will forgo his eligibility and enter the 2025 NFL Draft.
Saint Frances (Pa.) DT Eyan Thomas now steps into a bigger role as Maryland looks ahead to the spring portal window to bolster the interior defensive line.
