DL Sedrick Smith becomes latest portal commitment for Maryland football

Head coach Mike Locksley and Maryland football now have their third defensive line portal commitment in the fold during the spring portal window after former Alabama A&M DL Sedrick Smith went public with his decision.

His commitment comes fresh off his visit to Maryland after arriving on campus on Friday, April 25 and visiting through Saturday’s spring game where he fills a key need along the defensive line.

Smith, a 6-foot-4, 310-pound transfer, picked up offers from Georgia, Georgia Tech and Purdue along with drawing extensive Power Four interest. Smith was previously predicted to land at Georgia after visiting Athens days after entering the transfer portal, but now heads to College Park where he fills a key need and provides long-term stability at the position.

The commitment also comes shortly after Georgia native and fellow DL commit, Edwin Moore Jr, announced his transfer into the program.

Smith previously committed to South Carolina State before flipping to Alabama A&M where he posted 20 tackles, 3.5 TFLs and two sacks in 11 games in 2024. He joins the program with three years of eligibility remaining.

He now joins DL Cam Rice, DL Joel Starlings and DL Edwin Moore as interior defensive line commits during the spring window, while former Saint Francis NT Eyan Thomas has anchored the unit since arriving back in January. The need for interior defensive linemen was magnified once third-year DL Lavon Johnson, who will play at Texas in 2025, entered the transfer portal to further limit the Terps’ depth heading into the fall.

Maryland also returns Trey Reddick, Neeo Avery, Daniel Wingate, Mike Harris in the front seven with former four-star edge Zahir Mathis enrolling in June.
