After committing to Maryland back in early December, eyes remained on Saint Frances (Md.) five-star edge Zion Elee as blue-bloods worked to stay in the picture and get a crack at changing his mind during a summer visit. After taking one visit and initially setting up visits elsewhere, Elee has now closed his recruitment heading into March.
With ten months to go until signing day, Elee announced that his recruitment was closed while a source told IBG that the five-star has scratched official visits elsewhere and plans on taking one visit to Maryland for his official visit the weekend of June 20. TE Damon Hall and CB Khmari Bing, two more teammates currently committed to Maryland, are also expected to take their official visits to Maryland the same weekend while CB Hakim Satterwhite is set to head to College Park.
As for his other suitors, Elee took a visit to Auburn with Penn State, Alabama, Oregon, Ohio State, Texas A&M and South Carolina in the mix. The Nittany Lions made the stop at Saint Frances days after Elee made the trip down south to check out Auburn, working to get him to campus in the days ahead before bringing his younger brother to campus instead where he picked up an offer. Elee has been open that his continued recruitment is part of him enjoying the process while he remains committed to Maryland, but with official visit schedules beginning to get finalized, the plan for now is to only check out Maryland to close out June.
Assistant Aazaar Abdul-Rahim spearheaded efforts to get Elee receptive to staying home before officially turning the tide after the five-star visited for the homecoming win vs. USC.
“I actually had a real long conversation with coach Locks about how these kids in Maryland are going out to other colleges when they can just stay home,” Elee said at the time. “And that was really what he was trying to instill in my head – why go to all these other schools, all these other big named schools when you can stay home and do the same thing?”
“Recently, they’ve instilled into my head that staying home isn’t as bad as it seems so I have that as an option in mind now. I think just the conversations with the coaches just changed my perspective on Maryland.”
