Kevin Huerter teaming up with another Terp after three-team NBA trade

One day after facing off against a former Terp in the NBA, former Maryland guard Kevin Huerter will now team up with another former Terp elsewhere after being included in the De’Aaron Fox trade. Huerter lands in Chicago alongside Jalen Smith as part of a three-team trade that sent Fox and Jordan McLaughlin to San Antonio, Sidy Cissoko, Zach LaVine and several draft picks to Sacramento with the Bulls also receiving Zach Collins, Tre Jones and picks.

This marks the third team in seven seasons for the former Maryland guard, who is averaging below double figures scoring for the first time since his rookie season.

In his third season with the Kings, Huerter is averaging 7.9 points and 1.7 assists in nearly 21 minutes per game this season, drawing 15 starts in 43 appearances for a team sitting .500 overall. Huerter appeared in 129 games and started all but five prior to the 2024-25 season.

The news comes one day after Huerter scored three points in just eight minutes in a 34-point loss to Oklahoma City as Aaron Wiggins posted a career-high 41 points.

Huerter signed a four-year, $65 million contract while with the Hawks, though that expires following the 2025-26 season and he was noted as a potential trade target heading into the weekend by The Athletic.

The Athletic: “Huerter hasn't found his rhythm this year in Sacramento, and that's unfortunately been true for the past two years. Typically a real shooter — he made 38.2 percent of his 3s over his six-year career coming into this season — Huerter has only hit 30.3 percent from 3. He also hasn't brought value on defense. When Huerter isn't shooting at a high level, it can be hard to have him on the court even though teams continue to guard him as a guy they have to stay attached to. More than that, though, the Kings have a lot of depth at the guard and wing positions. In the backcourt, they have De'Aaron Fox and Malik Monk. On the wing, Keegan Murray, DeMar DeRozan and Keon Ellis have outplayed Huerter so far. Rookie Devin Carter also has entered the fold. Huerter makes $16.8 million before getting $18 million next year. Those are high numbers but not all that bad if he can get back to the level he was at in his final year in Atlanta and his first year in Sacramento. It feels like Sacramento would look to move him in a basketball trade as opposed to just looking to dump his contract. Can the Kings combine a draft pick with Huerter to get a player who can shoot and defend in the frontcourt?”

Huerter, who was drafted with the 19th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, is one of four Terps in the NBA alongside Smith (Chicago), Alex Len (Sacramento) and Aaron Wiggins (Oklahoma City).
