Maryland men’s basketball moved to 11-3 (1-2) after falling 75-69 in a humbling road loss vs. Washington and head coach Kevin Willard met with Chris Knoche to recap what went wrong at the Alaska Airlines Arena:
On the late defensive struggles vs. Washington
“That was the big thing. We had opportunities early in the second half. We missed a couple [of] layups and then our transition defense – they took advantage of it and I give [Great] Osobor a lot of credit, made some big plays. And that was, I think, the difference in the game.”
On Washington’s rebounding
“I think that’s something, and again, that we’ve really struggled with. Purdue really hurt us with the second shots. And on the road, we talked about it but I think you have to go through it. On the road, you’ve got to reward yourself for playing good defense and force some bad shots and we haven’t done that yet.”
On the need to improve scoring, production at home vs. road
“Well no, you’ve got to win by one, but I mean you’ve got to do all the little things. Again, first possession of the game we gave up a second shot and they hit a three. That’s not – I thought we played great defense in that first possession and then all of a sudden, you give up an offensive rebound and it just gives them, sets the tone from there. It’s tough to win on the road. We’ve got to battle and we’ll find a way.”
