Logan McNaney the latest addition to the Maryland men's lacrosse's #1 jersey club

With the season opener vs. Richmond set for this upcoming weekend, Maryland men’s lacrosse and head coach John Tillman ended the wait on who would earn the number one jersey for the upcoming season. That became official on Tuesday after the program revealed it’d be goalie Logan McNaney earning the prestigious honor heading into his final season with the program.

McNaney becomes the first goalie and the third consecutive defensive player to earn the prestigious honor of wearing the men’s lacrosse #1 jersey for the University of Maryland.

McNaney first appeared on the scene in 2020 as a true freshman when he took over in goal after the Terps suffered a close loss to Villanova. The Terps started to turn things around and won their next two games before the season was canceled due to COVID. He picked up where he left off to lead Maryland to an undefeated regular season and national championship game appearance as McNaney lost his first game in goal in heartbreaking fashion to Virginia.

In 2022, McNaney would yet again lead the Terps to an undefeated regular season but this time helping the Terps finish the season undefeated and winning the national title 9-7 over Cornell while also earning MVP honors in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. In 2023 however, McNaney’s career took a massive hit. In just the second game of the season at Loyola, McNaney would tear his ACL and keep him out for the rest of the season.

It wasn’t until just before the 2024 season started when McNaney was be fully cleared for play and he would take his starting job back. It took a while for him to look like his old self, but ultimately proved to yet again be a big part of the Terps 2024 NCAA tournament run after posting a 55% save percentage and allow just 8.3 goals per game in their three tournament wins.

McNaney was named the 47th-best player in the country by Inside Lacrosse ahead of the 2025 season as Maryland looks for its first conference regular season title since 2022. He will look to have a hot start to the 2025 season and help the Terps get back to their fourth national title game in the last five years.
