Maryland and head coach Mike Locksley remains active in the transfer portal, but the Terps added a local product on the offensive side of the ball on Wednesday night.
Former Shepherd wide receiver Khalid Jones announced his commitment to Maryland as a preferred walk-on. Jones, a 6-foot-1, 173-pound freshman, played his high school ball at nearby Quince Orchard High School as the Terps add another local talent to the roster. Jones entered the transfer portal back on April 28 after one season with the Rams before registering a stat.
“First of all, I just want to thank Coach McCook and the rest of the coaching staff for allowing me to play for this esteemed program,” Jones wrote on Twitter at the time. “I was not only able to become a better player, but I was able to become a better man as well. I have also made lifelong friends here that I can call my brothers. With that being said, I have entered my name in the transfer portal.”
As a high school prospect, Jones played both wide receiver and safety but was a primary target for current Buffalo quarterback Brian Plummer as a senior, recording the lone touchdown in a 7-0 win over Northwest during the shortened spring 2021 season. The intriguing connection? Jones is the cousin of Maryland’s running back coach Elijah Brooks, giving the Terps a family tie and another local product within the program.
Meanwhile, Maryland is working with five available scholarships in the transfer portal heading into the 2022 season.
