Maryland adds walk-on linebacker, makes the cut for pair of local receivers

Maryland has multiple available scholarships to work with in the transfer portal heading into the 2022 season, but the Terps added a quality walk-on on Monday afternoon.

Former Louisville walk-on outside linebacker Ian Maloney committed to Maryland as a walk-on to help the Terps replenish the depth in the room. Maloney committed to Louisville as a PWO over similar offers from Northwestern, Stanford and Wisconsin but did not record a stat during his one season with the Cardinals.

On the high school recruiting front, Maryland is still sitting at two commitments in the 2023 class but fans saw the Terps make the top group for a pair of local targets that the staff will have a good chance at reeling in.

St. Frances three-star wide receiver Ryan Manning released a top five of Maryland, Minnesota, Penn State, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech on Monday afternoon. The 5-foot-11 slot receiver has visited each of his top schools except Minnesota, though the Gophers have their own familiarity in their corner with freshman Ike White enrolled. Since March 1, though, Manning has made it to Maryland on at least three occasions with his parents making it to campus twice.

I talk to both coach Brewer and coach Thompson. They are great coaches but I talk to coach Brewer my position coach a lot. He knows a lot about the game and he’s a great person,” Manning previously told Inside the Black and Gold. Manning transferred into St. Frances this offseason from Bowie and is expected to be a focal point of the passing attack with 2024 four-star quarterback Michael Van Buren preparing for his first full season as the starter.

Meanwhile, Pallotti receiver Nathan Stewart has been able to make visits to nearby schools Maryland and West Virginia in recent months with the Terps intrigued by his 6-foot-5 frame as a receiving threat. Stewart flashes as a big-bodied outside receiver but told Inside the Black and Gold the staff opened the door to him playing tight end should he opt for Maryland. “They see me putting on weight to play that position and develop me into a great football player,” Stewart added. Stewart joins linebacker Daniel Wingate as teammates who hold offers from Maryland with summer commitments expected.

Manning is expected to make his commitment on June 18, his mother’s birthday.

Manning is rated a three-star prospect and an 88 overall by On3, sitting as the eleventh-best player in Maryland, while Stewart is not yet rated by the network.
