Maryland analyst accepts on-field role at Fresno State

Maryland senior offensive analyst Brian Ferentz is expected to join Fresno State’s offensive staff where he’s expected to take over the tight end room, per FootballScoop, ending the Brian Ferentz stint in College Park.

Ferentz will head to Fresno State under Matt Entz’s first staff at the program after Entz spent 2024 as a defensive analyst at USC. Prior to 2024, Entz went 60-11 in five seasons at North Dakota State.

Ferentz joined Maryland during spring ball where he served as a senior offensive analyst, aiding the tight ends and offensive line unit through the 2024 season with a chance to remain on the Terps’ staff in 2025. Still, the former Iowa coordinator returns to the sideline in what’s expected to be a bigger role than the one he served in College Park through the fall. Head coach Mike Locksley pointed to Maryland’s emphasis on improving its run game when asked about the Ferentz hire during spring ball.

“Having Brian here, I mean, he's like any other analyst. He brings something that I like,” Locksley said in April. “Anywhere he's been, he's been a part of running the football. What we do is what we do. He's coming in as an analyst. He'll make suggestions, he'll have the ability to, but he has a skill that I liked. I mean, the emphasis for me is how do we develop the run game on offense? To have a Brian Ferentz who has been a part of some of the best offensive lines and some of the best run games, giving ideas how they did it to add some of the stuff we already do. It's a win for me and it came cheap.”

After playing under his dad, current Hawkeye head coach Kirk Ferentz, Ferentz spent two seasons playing in the NFL before spending the next two seasons coaching in the league. Brian then reunited with his dad at Iowa for the next 12 seasons, including seven as the program’s offensive coordinator.
