Maryland football head coach Mike Locksley will have at least one more on-field role to fill this offseason after Lance Thompson is expected to join North Carolina’s stuff under first-year head coach Bill Belichick. Thompson’s departure to the Tar Heels was reported for IBG subscribers late Friday evening.
Thompson becomes the third public departure from the program since the start of the 2024 season after parting ways with offensive line coach Brian Braswell midseason and offensive coordinator Josh Gattis following the regular season.
Thompson joined the program in 2022, taking over a room previously led by Brawley Evans, after stints at Florida Atlantic, Alabama, Georgia Tech, LSU and South Carolina where he either coached or recruited players in eight national championship games. Thompson was also twice ranked as the nation’s top recruiter, first in 2014 by ESPN then again in 2018 by Rivals.
After arriving in College Park, it didn’t take long for the longtime assistant to draw rave reviews within his position group while becoming an integral part of the defensive staff. Thompson also became a key piece for Maryland’s recruiting efforts, initially spearheading efforts at Saint Frances before expanding into northern Virginia, Georgia and Florida to land players like Keyari James, Daniel Wingate, DeJuan Williams and Caleb Wheatland among others.
Thompson has also coached or recruited players like Julio Jones, Mark Barron, Trent Richardson, Chance Warmack, Laron Landry and Coutney Upshaw among others.
