Standing at 7-1 ahead of the start of Big Ten play, Maryland men’s basketball received votes for the fifth consecutive week.
Maryland drew 13 points in Monday’s updated AP poll, unofficially ranked 46th nationally. Maryland was last ranked back on Feb. 27, 2023, when they checked in at 21st nationally.
Head coach Kevin Willard saw his team fare better in the season debut of the NET rankings, though, sliding into the top-25 after checking in at 23rd nationally, also good for seventh in the Big Ten. Marquette, the lone team to outlast Maryland this season, debuted at seventh in the NET and moved up five spots to fifth in the AP poll with Villanova checking in at 92nd. Syracuse was the fourth-lowest rated power conference team at 177th, ahead of only Miami (FL), Seton Hall and Virginia Tech, magnifying the importance of Maryland’s success in conference play through the 2023-24 season.
Maryland is set to kick off Big Ten play this upcoming Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 6:30 PM against Ohio State. The Buckeyes checked in at 45th in the updated AP poll –drawing just six more points than Maryland – and 12th in the NET rankings.
Maryland women’s basketball, meanwhile, moved up three spots to seventh nationally. This marks the program's highest ranking since finishing sixth in the final 2022-23 AP Poll.
Head coach Brenda Frese watched her squad stay undefeated after defeating George Mason and Toledo by a combined 32 points in the Navy Classic in Annapolis. Maryland will welcome Mount St. Mary’s for a 7 PM tipoff on Tuesday before traveling to Purdue on Saturday, Dec. 7 to kick off Big Ten play.
