Maryland basketball heads to Big Ten Media Days

Maryland basketball heads to Chicago for Big Ten Media Days beginning today.

Women’s head coach Brenda Frese will take the podium on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 11:20 AM EST with All-Big Ten senior guard Shyanne Sellers and reigning Co-Big East Defensive Player of the Year Christian Dalce in attendance. After finishing 19-14 (9-9) last season, Maryland was predicted to finish fourth by both the league’s head coaches and media panel while Sellers was named to preseason All-Big Ten team. Sellers and led the team in points (15.6) and assists (5.5) as one of four players in the country to average more than 15 points, five rebounds and five assists in a season. Bri McDaniel also leads the way into her sophomore season, but the new portal additions are a big part of the Terps’ new identity after signing seven new players.

Dalce and Sarah Te-Biasu, the reigning A-10 Player of the Year, headline the group alongside All-Big Ten honoree Kaylene Smikle, All-SEC Freshmen Team honoree Saylor Poffenbarger, Amari DeBerry, Mir McLean and Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu.

Frese’s squad opens the season at UMBC on Nov. 4.

Meanwhile, men’s head coach Kevin Willard will take the podium on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 10:30 AM EST with fifth-year senior guard Selton Miguel and All-Big Ten forward Julian Reese. Maryland is coming off a 16-17 (7-13) season, the second time the program has finished sub-.500 in the last three years. Yet despite having to replace the production of Jahmir Young and Donta Scott, Maryland will have several portal pieces to turn to in Ja’Kobi Gillespie (Belmont), Selton Miguel (USF), Rodney Rice (VT) and Tafara Gapare (Georgia Tech) along with heralded five-star freshman Derik Queen.

Willard’s squad opens the season vs. Manhattan on Nov. 4 for a 7 PM tip.
