Maryland football will be well represented at the Shrine Bowl with WR Kaden Prather, DL Jordan Phillips, DL Tommy Akingbesote and SAF Glen Miller set to suit up, but one Terp has drawn rave reviews through the first two days of practices. In addition to being named one of ten standouts by AZ Sports, Cory Kinnan tabbed Phillips as the best prospect at the Shrine Bowl after checking out day one of the Shrine Bowl.
Via Kinnan: “It became extremely evident that Maryland defensive tackle Jordan Phillips is the best player on the field for the East squad. Not only that, but he’s likely the best player here in general. I came into the event already high on Phillips. I have a higher grade on Phillips than on Kenneth Grant and Ole Miss’ Walter Nolen. He’s lethally explosive off the ball, he is rocked up head-to-toe, impossible to displace from his gap, and just 20 years old. And it showed up. In every run game drill, Phillips could not be moved. His knee drop technique stands out on film, and it showed up again in duo block drills. Phillips looks the part, and he played the part on the first day of practice. In pass rush drills he routinely got his hands through the chest of the man across from him and walked them back into the pocket. He showed the prowess to reduce his surface area as a pass rusher and win through traffic. I already have a top-75 grade on Phillips, and that is looking clean right now.”
With defensive coordinator Brian Williams, strength and conditioning coach Ryan Davis and former offensive coordinator Josh Gattis all making the trip to Mobile this past weekend, Kinnan followed it up by tabbing Phillips one of the two best players in Mobile alongside Indiana DL CJ West as the former defensive lineman looks to elevate his draft stock. Phillips was ranked the ninth-best defensive tackle in Mel Kiper’s latest 2025 NFL Draft position rankings, one spot ahead of former Maryland, Miami (FL) and Florida State DL Darrell Jackson, while Athlon Sports projected the two-year starter to land in Dallas with the 76th overall selection.
Phillips, who was tabbed to Bruce Feldman’s annual ‘101 Freaks List, transferred from Tennessee following the 2022 season and ended his career in College Park with 57 total tackles and 2.5 TFLs while starting in 22 games and appearing in all 25 in two seasons.
The Shrine Bowl is set for this Thursday, Jan. 30 for 7 PM at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
