Two days after he was expected to make a move into the college ranks, head coach Mike Locksley is expected to bring a former Terp home with former Maryland wide receiver Geroy Simon now expected to join the university in a front office role.
After ten years working in a front office role in the CFL, Simon is expected to join Maryland's athletic department in a high-ranking role where he's expected to help with the university's NIL efforts ahead of the revenue-sharing plan.
Simon was expected to become the new general manager at Sacramento State under first-year head coach Brennan Marion with news breaking of the move on Sunday, but he’ll now head to the Big Ten in his first college job.
Simon’s coaching career began back in 2014 as an area scout for the Saskatchewan Roughriders before stints with the BC Lions and Edmonton Elks where he served as director of scouting – first in Canada before becoming global scout. Simon was named assistant general manager in 2022 before being promoted in 2024.
As a player, Simon shined in College Park where he still holds the program-record for most single-game receptions after posting 16 against Florida State back in 1995. The Pa. native still sits top ten all-time in career receptions (185), single-season receptions (77) and career receiving yards (2,059) before stints with the Bengals, Eagles, Steelers and Bucs in 1997 and 1998. Simon also signed to the Chiefs’ practice squad in 2001, but he spent 15 seasons of his playing career in the CFL where he set franchise records with the BC Lions and was named the CFL’s most outstanding player in 2006.
A two-time Grey Cup winner, Simon was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 2017 and saw his number inducted into the BC Lions’ Ring of Honour in 2015.
As Simon is now expected to boost the off-field staff, Maryland will move full steam ahead with its portal pursuit efforts with prospects able to resume visits beginning Wednesday, Jan. 1.
