Maryland football now has its portal quarterback as UCLA transfer QB Justyn Martin will close out his college career in College Park after committing on Sunday morning.
Martin, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound quarterback originally out of Inglewood (CA), heads to College Park with two years of eligibility remaining and will enroll in January. Martin arrived in College Park for a visit on Friday, Dec. 20 as head coach Mike Locksley and his staff landed their portal target.
Martin will now join a quarterback room headlined by MJ Morris, Malik Washington, Champ Long and Khristian Martin as the pursuit became an official need after head coach Mike Locksley saw Billy Edwards Jr. depart the program after one season as the starter in favor of Wisconsin.
While all eyes were on Maryland’s quarterback competition heading into the 2024 season, attrition was expected to hit the position as head coach Mike Locksley and his staff kept tabs on the quarterback market once the portal officially opened on Dec. 9. Maryland didn’t waste much time after Edwards told the staff his intention to enter the transfer portal back on Dec. 12, while Justyn Martin made his way to College Park on Dec. 20 and made his commitment official.
Martin’s first college start came in a 27-11 loss vs. Penn State back on Oct. 5 as Martin finished 22-of-30 passing for 167 yards and a touchdown. Martin also appeared against Indiana and Oregon where he finished a combined 2-of-5 for 12 yards while adding another 12 yards on the ground.
After redshirting in 2022, Martin ascended into the backup role in 2025 where he was expected to start for the Bruins in 2025 but elected to enter the transfer portal on Dec. 2.
“Justyn Martin played really well,” UCLA head coach DeShaun Foster said after the season-ending win vs. Fresno State. “He’s still a Bruin, so we’re going to evaluate everything, but when you have a backup quarterback that can come in and play well like that, you know everyone is excited about him and his future is bright at UCLA.”
Justy Martin is rated the 27th-best quarterback and 279th-best overall prospect in On3’s transfer portal rankings.
