Maryland will look to move to 2-1 when they hit the road for the first away game of the 2024 season on Saturday, Sept. 14, and the sportsbooks like the Terps’ early chances of getting back on track.
Maryland opens as a 2.5-point favorite against Virginia, per FanDuel, with the over/under opening at 51.5-points heading into the week three matchup. Maryland will look to pick up its fourth consecutive win and second in as many years against their former ACC rival, but they’ll need to get back on track in order to do so.
Virginia is coming off a comeback road win vs. Wake Forest after trailing by as many as 14 and staring at a 13-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter before the go-ahead rushing touchdown with just over two minutes remaining pushed the ‘Hoos to 2-0. Wide receiver Malachi Fields led the way with a team-high 148 receiving yards on 11 catches while QB Anthony Colandrea tossed his third career 300-yard passing game and first of the season.
Maryland, meanwhile, held onto a touchdown lead for roughly half of the opening 30 minutes before a 50-yard field goal gave the Spartans a three-point lead heading into halftime, a potential foreshadowing of Saturday’s ending. Maryland retook the lead on a 28-yard pass to TE Dylan Wade in the endzone, but a missed 41-yard field goal with under five minutes left gave the Spartans more than enough time. Michigan State would tie the game at 24 on the very next play thanks to a 77-yard catch and run before the Spartans drilled a 37-yard field goal in the closing seconds, securing their first win in College Park since 2018.
Virginia stormed out to an early 14-0 lead in the 2023 matchup in College Park before Maryland scored 42 unanswered points to move to 3-0 and pick up the 45th win over the ‘Hoos.
