Maryland football sees expected, but continued shakeup at quarterback heading into 2025

Maryland’s quarterback room will look a lot different in 2025 compared to 2024. After Cam Edge and Billy Edwards Jr. already hit the transfer portal, head coach Mike Locksley saw another departure to the room after QB MJ Morris officially entered the transfer portal on Friday evening.

After watching Taulia Tagovailoa begin his professional career, Maryland had a void to fill in its quarterback room last offseason as MJ Morris became a growing target for the staff through December.

"I just fell in love with the coaching staff and the people up there. The facilities are beautiful. That place is beautiful. I imagine myself living there as well, but just surrounded by a coaching staff that cares about you, how they talk about production and doing everything they can to put you in the NFL, I fell in love with it," Morris told IBG at the time.

Arriving in December to join a competition alongside Edwards and Edge heading into the spring, those starter aspirations didn’t materialize until Edwards was no longer available at the end of 2024.

In seven games and one start, Morris threw for 350 yards and five touchdowns to five interceptions while completing 59% of his passes. He added another 70 yards and one touchdown on the ground. His lone start came in the season-finale vs. Penn State with Billy Edwards inactive as Morris finished with 112 passing yards and one touchdown to three interceptions while completing 58% of his passes.

Morris arrived in College Park after spending two seasons at NC State where he totaled 1,367 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also had 103 rushing yards and a ground score. The dual-threat quarterback started in seven of his nine appearances with the program, but maintained a redshirt in 2023 to preserve eligibility.

Now, Morris will look for a path to a starting role elsewhere with two years of eligibility remaining. While it was looking more likely than not he returned to Maryland in 2025 after Edwards entered the transfer portal, Morris’ departure became expected once former UCLA QB Justyn Martin signed with the program one day after wrapping up his official visit. Martin joins heralded freshman signee Malik Washington as January enrollees as the two are likely the next and future starters in College Park. The duo join freshman Jackson Hamilton, redshirt freshman Khristian Martin, redshirt sophomore Champ Long and redshirt junior Jayden Sauray.
