Maryland football still projected to go bowling after bye week

Maryland football is back in action this week as they prepare for the second half of the 2024 schedule coming out of the bye. While Maryland will look to pick up their first Big Ten win of the season and move to 4-2 overall, they’ll also look to inch closer toward bowl eligibility as a pair of outlets still project the Terps to go bowling for the fourth consecutive season.

Kyle Bonagura on ESPN projected Maryland to land in the Detroit Bowl vs. Toledo, which is set for Dec. 26 at Ford Field. Mark Schlabach projected Wisconsin in the same bowl game vs. Toledo, while Athlon Sports projected Maryland to face Texas Tech in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl in last week’s update.

With Maryland a 9.5-point favorite heading into their next Big Ten matchup, head coach Mike Locksley will look to guide his team back into the win column when they host Northwestern for a Friday night matchup with kickoff set for 8 PM on FOX. While Maryland will look for its first win coming out of the bye since Mike Locksley took over, the Terps have won four of their last Friday night games and have won four consecutive primetime games. How the Terps look on Friday night, especially on offense, could be the biggest storyline heading into the bye week.

“It leaves us in that we've got two weeks to sit in this,” head coach Mike Locksley said after the Indiana loss. “For me, it gives me a chance to kind of recalibrate and look at the first-third of the season and say, scheme wise, take a look at that. Personnel wise, take a look at that. Everything's on the board for us as we go into that next third. But it’s just one game. Nobody told us it was going to be a direct route to the top.”

Maryland has already faced one team currently in the top-20 (Indiana, 18) and will face a pair of top-five teams in November when they travel to third-ranked Oregon on Nov. 9 and fourth-ranked Penn State on Nov. 30.
