Former Maryland and Charlotte safety Isaiah Hazel is expected to be honored during Saturday’s season opener vs. UConn at SECU Stadium, head coach Mike Locksley said during Thursday’s episode of Talkin’ Terps with Johnny Holiday.
“We’re going honor him against UConn and his family will be there,” Locksley said.
Hazel, 23, passed away on July 5 alongside AJ Lytton and Khyree Jackson in a car accident on northbound Route 4/Pennsylvania Avenue, according to police report. Though the former Wise star ended his college career at Charlotte alongside several former Maryland players, his impact off the field was clear as his coaches and teammates honored Hazel in the weeks since.
Hazel became the first prospect to commit to Maryland after Mike Locksley took over as head coach in December of 2018, flipping the local four-star from West Virginia after initial plans to play wide receiver before moving to safety as a sophomore. Hazel played in 39 games across his four-year career at Maryland, totaling 33 tackles over his final two seasons with the program.
New Ravens safety Beau Brade spoke about his former teammate on Thursday’s show.
“I just came back from the vigil and I was telling my parents, my mom, about it. When I was talking to my mom, I was like, coach [Mike] Locksley, what he said there really, I feel like that was really special for the parents and the families in that room,” he said. “They’re going through a time in their life that not a lot of people can relate to. And I feel like your message to them, as someone that's unfortunately been in that situation too, was a great message. And they obviously can learn from that and they take that advice, because they realize that you've also been that situation and they see how you've come out of it the other side. So I knew, from someone that's not been in that position, I know that must have meant the world to them to hear that.”
