Maryland linked to pair of new portal guards

Head coach Kevin Willard and the new Maryland staff have been linked to several guards in the transfer portal so far this offseason with the need to replenish the talent in the backcourt, but Maryland has been linked to a pair of new names.

Former Marquette guard Greg Elliott told ESPN that he’s working to schedule visits to Cleveland State, Colorado State, Maryland and Pittsburgh. Elliott announced his departure back on April 14 after it was expected he’d depart from the program for his final season of eligibility.

Elliott, a grad transfer, started eleven games in 114 appearances during his four years at Marquette where he leaves averaging 5.6 points per game in his career, including seven points as a senior. The 6-foot-3 guard also shot 44.8% from the field and 81.9% from the free-throw line during his collegiate career.

Maryland has also been linked to St. Bonaventure guard Dominick Welch, a 6-foot-5 senior guard. Jon Rothstein reported that Welch is also receiving interest from Kansas, Oklahoma State, Pitt, Rutgers, SMU, Texas Tech, Wake Forest and Wisconsin. Welch declared for the upcoming NBA Draft last month as well as he weighs his options with the deadline still weeks away.

“I just felt like it was the best and most comfortable position for me right now, to test the waters to see where I’m at,” Welch told the Buffalo News. “Just trying to go through the process and get that feedback.” Welch has started his last 85 games dating back to his sophomore season and has averaged at least 11.4 points per game, including 12.3 points last season. He scored at least 20 points four times last season and was named to the NIT All-Tournament Team after setting a new postseason single-game three point record for St. Bonaventure.

Maryland has immediate playing time at shooting guard to sell with Jahmir Young signed as next year’s point guard contingent on his return. Maryland also returns Ike Cornish and Ian Martinez in the backcourt next season and has four available scholarships for next season.
