After splitting their pair of games last week, Maryland men’s basketball remains on the outside-looking-in of the AP top 25. The Terps drew 39 points in the Monday’s updated AP poll, unofficially ranked 37th in the country.
After thrashing Ohio State in the Big Ten opener on Wednesday night, Maryland suffered its second defeat of the season after falling by five points against Purdue in the first road loss of the season. Maryland also fell two spots to 13th in the updated NET rankings, along with five spots to 19th in the updated KenPom rankings.
“I'm excited about this team. I mean, like I said, like the first time we played in front of a packed Xfinity Center, we did some things I'd never seen,” head coach Kevin Willard said after the loss. “So now, on the road in this conference, this is what it's like every game. So it's one of the best atmospheres. We'll go back, watch film, we'll learn from this. But I'm proud of the way our guys went out there and battled for 40 minutes.”
Maryland will hit the reset on the season before returning to action next Tuesday, Dec. 17 against Saint Francis (PA) in addition to its neutral site matchup vs. Syracuse on Dec. 21. Maryland’s next opportunity at a Quad One game will come during the new year whey travel to face Oregon on Jan. 5. The Ducks stayed steady at 12th in the updated AP poll.
Meanwhile, Maryland women’s basketball stayed steady at seventh nationally. Maryland is one of eight Big Ten teams ranked as they moved to 10-0 after taking down Purdue, 78-69, in the Big Ten opener days after pouncing Mount St. Mary’s in a 25-point win.
"Conference play in the best league in the country," head coach Brenda Frese said after the win vs. Purdue. “Anyone can beat anyone on any given night…I'll never take a road win for granted, especially with our start.”
Frese and her squad will be back in action next Thursday, Dec. 19 against William & Mary.
