Maryland men's basketball remains outside AP ranking, inside Coaches Poll, women remain steady

For the second consecutive week, Maryland men’s basketball remains just outside the AP top 25.

One week after finishing four points shy of the 25th ranking, Maryland drew 133 points and were six points away from their first AP ranking in nearly two years. Maryland unofficially checked in at 26th nationally in the AP, though was ranked 24th in the USA Today Coaches Poll

Head coach Kevin Willard and his squad wrapped up non-conference play after defeating UMES, 81-66, on Saturday afternoon to move to 11-2 on the season. They’ll return to action on Thursday, Jan. 2 at Washington in the first of two on the West Coast swing with conference play back in full swing. Oregon, who will host Maryland on Jan. 5, remains the highest-ranked Big Ten team at ninth ahead of UCLA (15), who will head to College Park on Jan. 10. Michigan State (18), Purdue (20) and Illinois (22) were also ranked while Ohio State, Indiana, Wisconsin, Penn State and Nebraska each drew at least one point.

Maryland also remains inside the top-25 in NET (13), EvanMiya (13) and KenPom (20), though the Terps’ schedule ranks 302nd nationally and fifth-worst among high major teams.

Maryland women’s basketball remained steady at eighth in Monday’s updated AP poll, still the third-highest ranked Big Ten team behind UCLA (1) and USC (4). Head coach Brenda Frese watched her squad move to 2-0 in conference play on Sunday afternoon after defeating Michigan State, 72-66, who since dropped two spots to 21st in the updated rankings.
