Maryland will look to get back in the win column on Super Bowl Sunday when they face Rutgers in the lone matchup against the two teams this season.
Maryland has won the last two in the series while head coach Kevin Willard enters Sunday 10-9 all-time against the Scarlet Knights. Sunday also marks a Quad Two game as Maryland looks to move to 3-1 in the metric.
After losing three of their last four games, Rutgers got back on track at home on Wednesday night in the return of Dylan Harper after taking down Illinois, 82-73, for their first ranked win of the season. Harper posted his 12th 20-point game of the season with 28 points, six rebounds and five assists in the win.
Harper is one of two star freshmen for Rutgers though as Ace Bailey has scored in double figures in all but one game this season in addition to his seven double-doubles. His 20.1 points per game marks a team high while he’s tied with Minnesota forward Dawson Garcia for most in the Big Ten, while Harper’s 19.1 sits fifth in the conference. While Harper and Bailey account for over 51% of the team’s scoring, freshman center Lathan Sommerville sits third on the team averaging 7.2 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.
But the Scarlet Knights have also allowed the second-most points per game in the Big Ten this season while Maryland is averaging 85.3 points in home games this season. Maryland is one of four high major teams with all five starters averaging double figures.
Derik Queen leads the way with 15 points per game as he and the Rutgers freshmen duo with scouts from 12 NBA teams expected in attendance on Sunday.
Meanwhile, senior Julian Reese enters the game 19 points from tying Tony Massenburg for 28th all-time in scoring and 12 rebounds away from tying Keith Booth for six most in program history. Reese has posted ten or more points in seven of Maryland’s ten games to begin the new year.
