Maryland men's lacrosse completes comeback vs. Duke, headed to Final Four

Maryland men’s lacrosse is headed to Philadelphia after punching a ticket to a Final Four following a 14-11 win over Duke on Saturday. Saturday’s win marks Maryland’s largest comeback in a postseason game since 2019, while the upcoming Final Four appearance marks the third in four seasons and ties Johns Hopkins for the most by any program in history (29). Duke jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as Blue Devil stars Brennan O'Neill and Dyson Williams scored or assisted on each. Right when Maryland needed an answer, it was Luke Wierman who turned a faceoff win into the Terps’ first goal roughly ten minutes into the game in what proved to be the lone highlight of the first quarter. Duke turned five first-quarter turnovers into three goals, including a turnover by Daniel Maltz in the final minute that helped Duke score with four seconds left to take a 5-1 lead into the second. Ryan Siracusa, who recorded his first career hat trick and scored in 14 of his last 15 games, and Daniel Maltz would give Maryland life after scoring 33 seconds apart to open the second quarter and cut Duke's lead in half. After the two teams traded another round of two-goal runs, Maryland had a chance to trim the deficit to one in the final minute of the first half, but drew similar fate to the first after Duke turned another Maryland turnover into a quick goal, handing the Terps an 8-5 deficit at the break. Maltz and Jack Brennan would team up to find the back of the net in the third, trimming the deficit back to two, before Maryland took over the fourth. Three goals within the first five minutes gave Maryland its first lead of the game, 10-9, before the two teams traded goals once again. But with just over five minutes to go, Daniel Maltz scored the go-ahead goal and his third of the game to give Maryland the lead for good. Two minutes later, it was Maltz again for his fourth goal of the game to push the Terps ahead 13-11. Maryland now holds a 63-20 all-time advantage over Duke and will face the winner of Virginia-Johns Hopkins on May 25 with the broadcast set for ESPN2.
