Maryland opens as comfortable favorite vs. Michigan State

Maryland football is back in SECU Stadium next Saturday as they kick off Big Ten play against the Michigan State Spartans. Maryland will look to move to 2-0 in the fourth consecutive season under head coach Mike Locksley, and heading into the week, the sportsbooks like the Terps’ chances of pulling off the win in the conference opener.

Maryland opens as slightly more than a one touchdown favorite vs. Michigan State with the Terps listed as a 7.5-point favorite on FanDuel, though the line has since moved to 8.5-points with the over/under opening at 46.5 points. DraftKings wasn’t far off with Maryland opening as a 7.5-point favorite, though the over/under line has not been released on the platform.

Michigan State holds a 10-4 all-time series lead, though Maryland has defeated the Spartans in each of the last two matchups by a combined 36 points.

Maryland is coming off a 50-7 win vs. UConn to open the 2024 season, recording the most points scored against an FBS team in an opener since the team posted 51 points on the road vs. Texas in 2017. The 43-point win also marked the largest margin of victory in a season-opener for Maryland against an FBS opponent since 1978. The seven points allowed marked the fewest for an FBS opponent in a season-opener since holding North Carolina to the same total back in 2001.

Michigan State, meanwhile, opened the Jonathan Smith era with a narrow 16-10 win over Florida Atlantic as quarterback Aidan Chiles finished just 10-for-24 for 114 yards with one rushing touchdown and a pair of interceptions.

Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM and will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
