Maryland punter Bryce McFerson has been named to the Ray Guy Award Ray’s 8, given to the nation’s top eight punters of the week. This marks the third consecutive week that McFerson has been recognized, becoming the only punter in the country to do so.
McFerson proved himself as a special teams weapon once again in week three, punting six times for an average of 47.33 yards, including a long of 57 yards and three inside the Virginia 20. McFerson is averaging 46.7 yards per punt this season, good for eighth in the country and second in Big Ten behind Purdue’s Keelan Crimmins. All but five of McFerson’s 16 punts have pinned opponents inside the 20 this season, while he leads the Big Ten with five 50+ yard punts.
McFerson transferred into the program from Notre Dame in late spring and immediately drew buzz as a potential difference-maker in the third phase of the game, elevating the punting unit and beating out Brendan Segovia. McFerson filled the void left by Colton Spangler, who has since joined the program as a special teams assistant.
