Coming off another career day, Maryland QB Billy Edwards Jr. drew a pair of honors on Monday after being selected to the Davey O’Brien Great 8, along with being named the DC Touchdown Club Washington Metro College Player of the Week.
Edwards was one of two Big Ten quarterbacks, joining UCLA QB Ethan Garbers, and one of four first-time honorees as the honor officially adds Maryland’s starting quarterback to the Davey O’Brien Award’s Midseason Watch List.
Edwards threw for a career-high 373 yards while accounting for three touchdowns, including a pair through the air, while finishing 39-of-50 in the win vs. USC. His 39 completions also marked a new career-high while his 78% completion percentage is the third-highest in program history.
“The biggest thing for me was just trying to continue what I did the whole game, where I found success and just getting the ball to playmakers, getting it out to Tai [Felton], getting it out to [Kaden Prather]. [Octavian Smith] had a great day. Dylan Wade made some big catches so just getting out to them, let them do the hard work,” Edwards said following the win.
Edwards punched in the game-winning score with 53 seconds left to complete the comeback.
Entering week nine, Edwards leads the Big Ten in completions (195) and is tied for second nationally in completions per game (30.8), sits eighth in both passing yards (2,113) and passing yards per game (301.9) while ranking ninth in completion percentage (70.1%). Maryland's passing offense leads the conference and ranks ninth nationally.
“On the last run, we had a couple [of] games in the past two drives that set that up with the bringing the tight end in motion across and then obviously saw green grass, pulled it. They ran out with Octavian Smith on the motion and obviously just put my foot in the ground and got vertical. Once I got in, brought the boom out there in the endzone.”
The Springfield, VA native joins Tai Felton as the second Terp to be named the DC Touchdown Club Washington Metro College Player of the Week this season.
Maryland will look to pick up its second road win of the season when they head to Minnesota on Saturday, Oct. 26 for a 3:30 PM kickoff on FS1.
