Maryland announced their ACC/Big Ten matchup on Friday morning as the Terps will travel to Louisville on November 29.

The game will feature a familiar face along the opposing sideline with Danny Manning, the former Maryland assistant turned interim head coach, now on the Louisville coaching staff alongside former Duke guard Nolan Smith. Both teams enter the 2022-23 season under new coaching staffs after Kenny Payne was announced as the Cardinals’ next head coach back on March 18. Maryland announced Kevin Willard as the program’s next head coach just three days later as the Terps prepare for a bolstered 2022-23 schedule with the non-conference slate seemingly wrapped up.

The following non-conference matchups have been previously reported:

November 7: Niagara

November 15: Binghampton

November 19: Saint Louis

November 20: Miami/Providence

November 25: Coppin State

December 11: Tennessee (Barclays Center)

December 14: @ UCLA

December 22: Saint Peter’s

December 29: UMBC

Maryland is 1-7 in the matchups since entering the Big Ten, including a 62-58 at home to Virginia Tech last season in what turned out to be the final game in the Mark Turgeon era.

This will mark the first time Maryland and Louisville are playing in the Challenge. All-time, the Terps trail the series, 6-2 including a 63-55 loss in the Bahamas last season on Nov. 27, 2021. Prior to that game, Maryland won the last two meetings, winning 95-73 on Nov. 20, 2000 in the Maui Invitational as Terence Morris scored 24 points in the win, while Lonny Baxter added 18 and Juan Dixon and Byron Mouton each chipped in 15. The previous meeting was a Terps' 72-67 win on Dec. 28, 1992 in College Park.

This season's matchup will feature several storylines on the sidelines as new Maryland head coach Kevin Willard will be facing a school he worked at for six seasons, as a Cardinal assistant coach from 2001-07. Also, Maryland is going up against a Louisville staff that includes Danny Manning, who served as the Terps' interim head coach in 2021-22.

In the 23 years of the Challenge, Maryland is 11-12 all-time, competing as part of the ACC from 1999 through 2013 and in the Big Ten since 2014. The Big Ten has won the Commissioner's Cup of the Challenge in each of the last three seasons, including winning the 2021 match-ups 8-6.

This marks the 24th year of the Challenge, which started in 1999. ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to televise all 14 games of the event, and all games will also be available to stream via the ESPN app.
