Maryland, Virginia announce four-year series beginning 2025-26

While Maryland and Virginia will meet this upcoming weekend in football, Maryland basketball announced a four-year series with its former ACC rival on Wednesday.

The series is set to begin in 2025-26 in Charlottesville as the ‘Hoos will also host Maryland in 2027-28. Maryland, meanwhile, will welcome Virginia to College Park in 2026-27 and 2028-29.

Next season’s matchup will mark the first since 2018-19 when Virginia pulled out a five-point win in College Park, the second consecutive win in the series and eighth in the last nine matchups. Maryland’s last win in the series was back on March 9, 2014 in their final game as an ACC school when Seth Allen finished with a team-high 20 points to take down the fifth-ranked ‘Hoos. Maryland is 108-76 all-time against Virginia as the border rivals once played every season for 80 years until the Terps’ move to the Big Ten.

This marks the latest future non-conference series for head coach Kevin Willard with the Terps set to begin a four-year series with Georgetown next season, giving fans a glimpse into a bolstered non-conference schedule like promised.

“Maryland and Virginia have a long basketball history and we're excited to bring this series back to life," Maryland head coach Kevin Willard said via release. "Looking ahead, I think it means a lot to our fanbase to have our historic rivalries rekindled between Georgetown and now Virginia which has been outstanding under Coach Bennett."

"We are excited to announce a four-year series with Maryland," Virgina head coach Tony Bennett said. "I greatly respect Coach Willard and what he's doing there. We've played some exciting games against Maryland in the past, and we're looking forward to a highly competitive series."

Maryland will open the 2024-25 season on Monday, November 4 against Manhattan in the XFINITY Center. In addition to Marquette, the non-conference slate will also be highlighted by neutral site games against Villanova (Prudential Center) and Syracuse (Barclays Center).

The Terps' returning players are highlighted by rising senior Julian Reese, rising sophomore DeShawn Harris-Smith, and fifth-year senior Jordan Geronimo. Maryland has one of the top incoming transfer classes in the Big Ten: Ja'Kobi Gillespie (Belmont), Selton Miguel (South Florida), Rodney Rice (Virginia Tech) and Tafara Gapare (Georgia Tech). Additionally, the Terps signed five-star McDonald's All-American Derik Queen(Baltimore) and four-star guard Malachi Palmer (Harrisburg, Pa.).
