Six years to the day when Jalen Smith delivered a game-winning bucket in Bloomington, Maryland men’s basketball will face Indiana on Sunday in the lone matchup this season.
The Hoosiers have won six of the last seven and lead the all-time series, 14-9, while Maryland head coach Kevin Willard is 2-3 against the Hoosiers and Mike Woodson.
Both teams enter Sunday with matching conference records and looking to avoid falling back to .500 in league play while the Hoosiers will look to get back in the win column. After winning five in a row dating back to non-conference play, the Hoosiers fell by a combined 50 points in losses against Iowa and Illinois before securing a one-point overtime win vs. Ohio State nine days ago. But after battling back to take a brief three-point lead, the Hoosiers fell back in the loss column after Northwestern’s dominant scoring run into the closing minutes of a 79-70 loss on Wednesday.
Arizona star transfer Oumar Ballou leads the way averaging a double-double with 14.5 points and 10.2 rebounds, including nearly 18 and 12 over his last seven games to set up a star-studded matchup against Julian Reese. Mackenzie Mgbako and Myles Rice are the two starters joining Ballou averaging double-figures this season among the starters, while junior big Malik Reneau – who missed five games due to injury - is averaging 13.3 off the bench. Luke Goode, who posted a career-high 23 points in the road win vs. OSU, and Anthony Leal round out the expected starting five for an Indiana team allowing the third-most points (72.8) among Big Ten teams.
As for Maryland, they'll look to extend their win streak to three games after Julian Reese and Derik Queen, who picked Maryland over Indiana out of Montverde Academy, combined for 52 points and 23 rebounds against 17th-ranked Illinois. The Baltimore duo led the way for 62 points in the paint, the most by any Big Ten team this season. All five starters enter Sunday averaging double figures and at least 43% from the field, but the battle in the frontcourt could dictate the Terps’ chances in Bloomington.
Sunday serves as the second of four consecutive Quad One games where Maryland moved to 2-4 following the win vs. Illinois.
Julian Reese also enters Sunday seven points away from tying Joe Smith for 31st-most points all-time.
