Maryland men’s basketball is back in action for its second and final game of the week inside the Xfinity Center as they host Mount St. Mary’s on Friday night.
Maryland head coach Kevin Willard is 2-0 all-time against Mount St. Mary’s as Maryland remains undefeated against the in-state foe while Mount St. Mary’s is 0-23 all-time vs. Big Ten schools. Maryland secured a 15-point win against the Mountaineers at home to kick off the 2023-24 season as Julian Reese led the way with 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting.
After being selected to finish 11th in the annual preseason conference coaches poll, the Mountaineers kicked off a new era after Donny Lind served as head coach for the first time, guiding Mount St. Mary’s to a 36-point win vs. Notre Dame of Maryland on Monday.
Five players finished in double figures as Dola Adebayo, a third team preseason All-MAAC selection, is coming off a 16-point performance that tied his career-high while sophomore guard Dallas Hobbs led the way with a game-high 17 points. Jedy Cordilia (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Terrell Ard (12 points, 14 rebounds) both finished with double-doubles, marking the first game since 2021 that the Mount had two players post a double-double in the same game.
Veteran Xavier Lipscomb is back after missing all but two games in 2023-24, but Mount St. Mary’s is leaning on several new faces this season led by three transfers – Carmelo Pacheco (UVA Wise), Javon Ervin (Peninsula College), Arlandus Keyes (Ellsworth Community College) and Jaxon Hartman (West Virginia Westleyan).
Maryland, meanwhile, rode a dominant second half that featured a 28-6 to cement the season-opening win after topping Manhattan, 79-49.
Derik Queen stole all the headlines in the win after his career debut, finishing with 22 points and 20 rebounds in 27 minutes in a stat line that dusted off several program records. His 22 points were the most by a Maryland freshman in his debut since Joe Smith posted 26 in 1993, while his 20 rebounds mark the most by any Big Ten freshman in a debut since at least 1996-97. Maryland also finished with 54 total rebounds, the most since coming down with 63 vs. Clemson on March 2, 2014.
Maryland will have another chance to dominate the boards on Friday night with Jedy Cordilia, a 6-foot-9 forward, filling in as the Mountaineers’ center.
