Week two of the NFL preseason kicks off on Thursday night with former Maryland kicker Chad Ryland back in action in the midst of a kicking competition in New England, but former Maryland safety Beau Brade drew high praise from Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Zach Orr after game one.
“He’s a locked in young guy. I love to see that as a UDFA,” Orr said following Tuesday’s practice. “We knew he was talented coming from Maryland and all he’s done is come in and work. I know he had the injury in the spring but ever since he’s been back, he’s continued to get better and better and better and I’m real excited about him. I’m excited about him in the game. I’m excited about him to see what he’s going to do this week as well.”
Brade finished with three tackles, including two solo, in a 16-13 loss against the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday night while also forcing a fumble in punt coverage, though the Eagles were able to retain possession. He wasn’t the only former Terp to suit up for Baltimore as offensive lineman Corey Bullock lined up at right guard, earning a 87.9 PFF grade and the highest among Baltimore’s offensive players.
Brade made his NFL debut with his former teammates in action as head coach Mike Locksley took the team into the Charm City following the first scrimmage of fall camp. Heading into his first NFL preseason, Brade was picked by Bleacher Report as the UDFA signing with the best chance to make the Ravens’ 53-man roster.
Bleacher Report:
The Baltimore Ravens have a nice trio of safeties at the top of the depth chart in Kyle Hamilton, Marcus Williams and Eddie Jackson. They employed plenty of three-safety looks that took advantage of Hamilton’s versatility last season.
With Jackson replacing Geno Stone, the Ravens might want to ensure that they have proper depth at the position. That’s how Beau Brade could wind up making the roster.
Brade has some versatility himself. According to Pro Football Focus, he lined up in the slot, as a box safety and deep at Maryland. He showed the ability to stick his nose in the run game while also carrying tight ends up the seam.
The Ravens’ recent signing of Jackson could complicate Brade’s path to a roster spot. Ar’Darius Washington will likely be the fourth safety, so Brade will have to convince the coaching staff that he’s worth keeping on as a fifth safety.
