Roman Hemby becomes second player to transfer to one of Maryland football's 2025 opponents

Roman Hemby officially joined Billy Edwards as former Terps to find a home with a team on Maryland football’s 2025 schedule. After Edwards inked with Wisconsin last week, Hemby signed with Indiana on Monday morning as expected following his weekend visit.

While the Edwards reunion is set for Sept. 20 in Madison, Hemby will suit up in SECU Stadium one last time with Indiana and head coach Curt Cignetti set to head to College Park on Nov. 1.

After awaiting NFL Draft feedback, Hemby drew extensive Power Four interest once he officially entered the portal with schools like Ole Miss and Texas Tech drawing buzz in his recruitment. But the Hoosiers became a bigger player in the days leading up to the visit for the former John Carroll (MD) standout with a high six-figure offer in Bloomington on the table and the visit a chance to finalize the process.

After maintaining his redshirt in 2021, Hemby amassed 2,276 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns over the last three seasons while adding another 111 catches and five receiving touchdowns. Hemby finished his career ranked inside the top ten in total touchdowns (27), rushing touchdowns (22) and rushing attempts (481) while his 2,347 career rushing yards mark the 11th-most in program history. Hemby was expected to be on the fence between the 2025 NFL Draft and the transfer portal with a fifth season in College Park unlikely.

Maryland’s running back room has plenty of young talent waiting to shine, though, with Nolan Ray leading the way while DeJuan Williams and Josiah McLaurin look to step into elevated roles in year two. Ray was consistently praised through offseason workouts where he provided optimism for the future at the position.

“Nolan Ray is a young guy that really came on this spring and probably made one of the biggest jumps and biggest impacts on our team that people are really excited about,” former OC Josh Gattis said.

“A guy I’m excited about Nolan Ray, really young player that has shown us he has the propensity to hit the big one,” Locksley added shortly before Gattis took the podium.

A pair of freshmen will also head to College Park with former Quince Orchard four-star Iverson Howard enrolling in January and DeMatha (MD) three-star Bud Coombs, also set to play baseball in College Park, arriving in June.
