Spalding QB Malik Washington named candidate for MaxPreps National Player of the Year

Another week, another accolade for Spalding (MD) four-star quarterback Malik Washington after being named to MaxPreps National Player of the Year Watch List this week.

Washington was one of ten total players and five quarterbacks named to the watch list, though he’s the only player along the east coast to be recognized.

The four-star Maryland pledge has opened the season in stride, completing nearly 62% of his passes and throwing for 1,061 yards and nine touchdowns to just one interception while adding another 224 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Despite getting adjusted to his new skill players this fall, Spalding’s offense has remained efficient with the passing game leading the way as ’26 WR Aaron Igwebe, ’27 WR Myles McAfee and ’28 WR Kam Miller have stepped up as playmakers.

Washington’s efficiency leading the Cavaliers’ offense has made them arguably the most complete team in the DMV after dominating both Archbishop Hoban (OH) and DeMatha (MD) to open the season before shutting out McDonogh, 45-0, in a rematch of the 2023 MIAA championship game.

Washington will look to lead Spalding to their seventh consecutive win when they take on St. Mary’s (MD) on Friday night with Concordia Prep, Loyola Blakefield and Mount St. Joseph left on the schedule before ahead of playoffs. The Maryland pledge will look to guide Spalding to their third consecutive state championship, marking the first time in school history it’s been done, before heading to the All-American game then College Park in January.

Washington announced his commitment to Maryland over Syracuse, Virginia Tech and UCF among others to give the Terps their quarterback of the future.

“Being able to go to the games and getting up on campus just made me feel like more of a fit. Talking to the coaches and players about the environment about gamedays, being able to see myself in their shoes definitely helped,” he said. “Being able to have my mom around me, watch my little brother grow up, things like that. Just them being able to come to the games, come support definitely played a part.”
