Maryland is set to kick off its 2023 season this weekend and they’ll do so with several veteran pieces leading the way, while a pair were recognized among the best at their position on Monday. Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa and wide receiver Tyrese Chambers both made the top five in Howard Griffith’s post-camp Big Ten rankings. Tagovailoa, who checked in as the second behind seemingly consensus top Big Ten in Michigan’s JJ McCarthy, has been a popular pick among preseason watch lists as he looks to add to his illustrious Maryland career. Tagovailoa enters his fourth season as Maryland’s quarterback with clear-cut goals for a Big Ten title, while the stability he brings at the most important position marked a key offseason win for the program. “ has the ability to have a positive impact on others,” Locksley said at media day. “ you have that type of leadership from that position, it gives you hope that you have a chance to go out and play…a way that he’s capable of playing consistently.” Tagovailoa will do so under his third offensive coordinator since arriving in College Park, but another who has a chance to build on his familiarity with Locksley’s offense. “He’s always thirsty for knowledge, he’s always looking for a way to improve,” first-year offensive coordinator Josh Gattis said. “And we’re excited to continue to try to find ways to enhance his game.” https://twitter.com/Insideblackgold/status/1696171158679285880 Chambers, who finished behind the Ohio State duo of Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka, has been a popular pick as a top receiver in the Big Ten from the national media. The Baltimore native looks to make an impact in his first season with the program after beginning his college career as an FCS All-American at Sacred Heart. One year later at FIU, Chambers established himself among the top deep threats in the nation during the 2021 season, rankings second nationally with a 23.87 yards per catch average. His 1,000-yard season led him to the portal where the 6-foot-1 receiver drew Power Five interest before returning to FIU for one more year. After the 2022 season, Tyrese Chambers was back in the transfer portal but it didn't take long until he made the decision to transfer into College Park back in January, since becoming a mainstay at the top of the receiver room. “This is a dream come true, man. This has been my dream school since I was a child. It took me a couple years to get here, but I’m finally here, man. I’m finally here. I’m blessed and thankful,” Chambers said in the spring. Maryland opens their season on Saturday against Towson for a 3:30 PM kickoff. Related Links
