After Maryland's dominant opening round win over the Princeton Tigers, both Inside Lacrosse and USA Lacrosse Magazine released their All-American teams on Monday as Ajax Zappitello, Luke Wierman, and Eric Spanos were all honored. Zappitello became the first Terp since Logan Wisnauskas in 2022 to become a unanimous selection on the Inside Lacrosse All-American team, and the lone unanimous selection on this year's team. Zappitello adds to his already long list of accolades in his career after earning the honor for the third consecutive season, along with being named a USA Lacrosse Magazine All-American a second time. The latest honor comes after being named the 2024 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, along with earning the Big Ten Medal of Honor, after causing a team-leading 23 turnovers and 29 groundballs. Meanwhile, Wierman earned honorable mention selections from both publications as he became a three-time All-American. Wierman has 192 face-off wins this season, winning face-offs at a 61.3% rate and owning the all-time record in career face-off wins for the Terps with 829. With 109 groundballs on the season, he also enters Saturday's game vs. Duke just three groundballs away from the program's all-time leader. Wierman’s two honorable mention selections adds to his season accolades after being named second-team All-Big Ten and a Tewaaraton nominee. Spanos is having a career season, leading to the first honorable mention All-American honors in his career. The junior midfielder/attackman only earned USA Lacrosse Magazine Honorable Mention honors after tallying a career-high in goals (23), assists (11), and ground balls (9) this season. Spanos led the Terps' midfielders in scoring with 34 points total coming off of 23 goals and 11 assists while also picking up nine ground balls. While he did switch to attack after Braden Erksa got hurt, Spanos did most of his scoring damage from the midfield spot this season. It will be interesting to see if head coach John Tillman keeps him at attack for the rest of the season or if he is moved back to midfield for the quarterfinal game against Duke. Maryland lacrosse is to take on one of their biggest former ACC rivals with a matchup against the Duke Blue Devils set for Saturday, May 18th at Hofstra University in the NCAA tournament Quarterfinals. The game will face-off at 2:30 PM and air on ESPNU.
