Maryland basketball head coach Kevin Willard and his staff have landed their second commitment in the 2025 class as Mt. Zion (MD) top-100 prospect Chris Jeffrey announced his commitment to Maryland on Wednesday afternoon.
Jeffrey, a 6-foot-3 point guard, committed to Maryland over a final group including Mississippi State and Texas A&M. Jeffrey announced his decision today after giving head coach Kevin Willard and the staff his pledge in mid-September.
“I chose Maryland because it felt like home the moment I stepped on campus. Plus, coach [Kevin] Willard does a great job with point guards, so I believe I can be the next great point guard he develops,” Jeffrey told IBG ahead of his decision.
Assistant Greg Manning Jr. led the way on the New York native, but the relationships between Jeffrey and the entire Maryland staff made the new-local team a constant in his recruitment. Jeffrey took his official visit to Maryland back in late June as the Terps worked to kick off the class, but the four-star stayed true to his commitment plan as the Terps held the inside track throughout.
“It felt really good being around them because they’re always at my games, so sitting down and getting to talk to them face-to-face was really good,” Jeffrey told IBG after his official. “It was great getting up there, getting to know the coaching staff a little bit more, seeing things that they do and how they differ from other colleges because they take their bodies way more serious to get to the next level. A lot of coaches prepare for right now but I could tell that Maryland, they’re preparing to get guys to the next level.”
With Maryland already entrenched in his recruitment, Jackson saw his profile soar through the summer are jumping from a three-star to the 69th-best prospect in the class. Jeffery averaged 17 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.8 assists in six games at Peach James, shooting 56% from the field and 60% from three.
Jeffrey heads to College Park to bolster a point guard room that is expected to return Ja’Kobi Gillespie and Rodney Rice in 2025-26, but the chance to reunite with former high school teammate and current freshman Malachi Palmer has been the cherry on top in the Terps’ pursuit. “It just gives him another familiar face there, someone he knows and trusts,” head coach Brian Scott previously told IBG.
Jeffrey now joins Compass Prep (MD) four-star Marcus Jackson in Maryland’s 2025 class to give Willard his second top-100 pledge of the cycle. Maryland remains a finalist for South Lakes (VA) four-star Jordan Scott while Largo (MD) four-star Cam Ward took an official visit to Maryland last month with both eyeing decisions within the coming weeks.
