'27 top-25 prospect says Maryland "kind of feels like home," working on return visit

Maryland played host to a small group of prospects for Saturday’s non-conference finale win vs. Villanova, but it also marked a return visit for a marquee 2027 visitor as top-25 prospect and four-star offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller made his way back to College Park for his third visit in 2024.

Maryland jumped into the picture for Hiller, a 6-foot-5, 295-pound lineman, back in April as he made his way to campus for a spring practice before returning for a workout in June. Saturday marked his first gameday visit, though, and Hiller left College Park knowing he’s comfortable around the Terps.

“It’s always good when I come down there. I’ve been there so many times that I feel like it just kind of feels like home,” Hiller told IBG. “Before the game I got a chance to sit down with coach [Mike] Locksley, catch up on some stuff, recruiting and then talked about our families to see how everything is with him.”

Then came gametime where Hiller watched the Terps handle FCS opponent, Villanova, en route to a 38-20 win as the early priority ’27 target stayed through the final whistle. “They did what’s expected against a team like Villanova. I stayed for the full game then with like two minutes left, went back to the locker room and watched the team come in there and have like a little water fight. That was fun.”

While heralded freshman Terez Davis got his first extended run of his college career on Saturday, there was another freshman who caught Hiller’s eye. “They mentioned a couple of the freshmen got in. I wouldn’t say I know him – I played against him – but Anthony Robsock. He’s a big dude, played against him last year. It’s definitely, I wouldn’t say weird, but it’s exciting, cool to see.”

The Pennsylvania native also credited his early relationship with Casey Wasserman, who left the Tennessee Titans to become Maryland’s new coordinator of recruitment in June. “Out of everybody, I talk to him the most. That’s my guy. I love him – great guy. The first time I met him, he invited me down for a spring practice and that was the first time I met him so he’s the man. [Recruiting analyst] Christian [Feliziani], too.”

While Hiller has built close ties with multiple people within the program, that extends to the on-field staff with head coach Mike Locksley pitching in on an effort involved by several assistants and analysts. “I’d probably say I talk with coach [Josh] Gattis the most. I know Gattis really well, coach [Brian] Braswell too. Coach [Brian] Ferentz, coach Locksley, coach Wrobo – all of them, really. They just like to go in-depth about how much of a priority I am. Like I love hearing that. It’s been great getting to know them and they’re building a great program down there at Maryland.”

Hiller will hit the road for more gameday visits with plans to visit Columbus for Ohio State’s home game vs. Nebraska on Oct. 26, while he’ll head to nearby Penn State for the White Out game vs. Washington on Nov. 9. He’s also working on two more visits.

“I’m working on Auburn right now and I’m trying to get back to Maryland for the USC game.”

Maxwell Hiller is rated a four-star and 90 overall by On3, checking in as the nation’s 23rd-best prospect and top interior offensive line prospect in the 2027 class.
