Transfer portal bug hits Brenda Frese, Maryland women's basketball

After blowing a 20-point lead vs. Iowa State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, head coach Brenda Frese will look to reload in 2024-25 and she'll do so without at least one key player from this year's team. Faith Masonius, the longest-tenured Terp, announced her intention to enter the transfer portal on Monday after five season with the program. “Terp nation, thank you for welcoming me with open arms and loving me throughout the past five years,” Masonius said on Twitter/X. “I have nothing but love for the school, program and entire coaching and support staff.” https://twitter.com/faithmasonius13/status/1774830294362665010?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet A two-time team captain, Masonius was a staple for Maryland after starting in 16 games as a fifth-year senior, averaging 6.6 points and 3.9 rebounds. She made his first career start during her sophomore season before watching her junior year cut short nine games into the season after suffering a torn ACL. The New Jersey native returned as a senior to start every game in 2022-23, averaging 10.3 points while shooting over 62% from the field. Masonius scored in double figures in seven games in her fifth season as a Terp, including the last three games of her Terp career. She became the second Terp to enter the transfer portal after freshman guard Summer Bostock, who averaged less than five minutes per game in ten appearances, entered the portal last week. She wouldn't be the last freshman, though, after Riley Nelson entered the transfer portal on Tuesday morning. Nelson, a former five-star recruit and McDonald's All-American, averaged 5.1 points per game off the bench in her lone season with the program after flashing potential. She posted a career-high 15 points against Niagara in November, but her year was cut short after suffering a torn ACL against Purdue in mid-January. Frese and the staff now have five vacant scholarships to work with ahead of next season, while Maryland will welcome its three-person 2024 class headlined by a trio of four-stars in Kyndal Walker, Breanna Williams and Ava McKennie. Maryland finished 19-14 (9-9) this season, the most losses for the program since the team finished 10-18 in Frese's first season with the program back in 2002-03. Related Links
