Two Terps take home Olympic gold medals for first time ever

For the first time ever, two former Maryland stars are taking home gold medals after wrapping up the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Alyssa Thomas became the second Terp to win a gold medal after USA Women’s Basketball defeated France, 67-66, on Sunday afternoon. Thomas averaged 3.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists through the Olympics to help USA women’s basketball win their eighth consecutive gold medal. She became the first Olympian from Maryland women’s basketball since Vicky Bullett won a bronze and gold medal in the 1988 and 1992 Olympics.

Thomas joined Thea LaFond as gold medalists after the former Maryland track star won gold in the triple jump earlier this month, beating Thomas as the first former Maryland student-athlete to win gold since Bullett did so. LaFond and Thomas become the tenth and 11th all-time overall gold medalists in Maryland athletics history.

While at Maryland, Thomas led the Terps to the 2014 Final Four and was named a three-time All-American after becoming one of only three players in program history with 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career. She also set the school record for single-season rebounds (381) during the 2013-14 season.

Alyssa Thomas is set to be inducted into Maryland’s 2024 hall of fame class, which will be held on Friday, Oct. 18 at the College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center. Thomas is among the long list of former Terps set to be honored as she joins Lonny Baxter and Patrick Mullins are among the eight inductees.
