Maryland football inked its tenth transfer portal addition of the offseason after Central Connecticut OT Rahtrel Perry finalized his decision coming out of the weekend. Perry serves as one of the biggest portal wins of the early offseason with several Power Four schools also in the mix for the 6-foot-5 tackle, but head coach Mike Locksley and his staff have worked to fill a number of needs on both sides of the ball through the first month of the portal frenzy.
Maryland’s offseason portal haul ranks top-40 in both On3 and 247’s team rankings, with On3 slotting the Terps at 27th overall with 247 ten spots lower. While 247 ranks Maryland's current transfer portal class as the tenth-best in the conference, On3's team rankings - which also factors in outgoing attrition to measure a team's net talent improvement - placed Maryland as ninth in the conference. Oregon, Michigan, Rutgers, Washington, UCLA, Ohio State, Michigan State and Minnesota – five of whom will play Maryland in 2025 – ranked ahead of Maryland in On3’s team rankings. Rivals was not considered due to only six commits listed.
While a handful of key players have departed this offseason – including two transferring to teams on the 2025 schedule – the staff have restocked the trenches, secondary and receiver room while moving quickly to land their transfer portal quarterback in QB Justyn Martin. He and Perry Perry joined OL Jayvin James, TE Dorian Fleming, WR Kalen Webb, WR Jalil Farooq, DL Eyan Thomas, edge DD Holmes, CB Dontay Joyner and CB Jamare Glasker while head coach Mike Locksley was transparent about the roster needs last month.
“I can tell you that some of the glaring areas of improvement have to be up front on the [offensive] line, which I saw us make strides with by the end of the year,” he said on signing day. “And then the secondary, the corners and now losing two safeties that have been three-year starters, addressing that area. The front we've addressed. And so we'll continue to use the portal to maybe address some of those areas, bring in a couple of linemen, bring in maybe a C-area guy there at tight end, bring in some corners and safeties that have the ability to come in and immediately help us, like we've been able to do with the Jakorian Bennett’s, the Ja’Quan Shepperd’s that have come here the last few years and help us. And I anticipate us doing some of that here once the portal opens and I expect us to be pretty active thanks to the resources that we've been provided this year.”
