Maryland men’s basketball climbed two spots to 11th in the updated AP poll on Monday to close the 2024-25 regular season, marking the program’s highest ranking of the season and highest since finishing ninth in the AP poll back on March 2, 2020. Maryland also climbed three spots to 11th in the updated coaches poll.
With a double-bye already secured days ago while this weekend’s results delivered Maryland a second-place regular season finish in the Big Ten, their best finish since 2019-20, Maryland also finds themselves climbing the bracketology picks with a four-seed now a consensus selection among the bigger outlets.
ESPN: four-seed vs. Yale (West Region, Providence)
On3: four-seed vs. Yale (East Region, Providence)
The Athletic: four-seed vs. Akron (South Region, Seattle)
CBS: four-seed vs. Lipscomb (East Region, Seattle)
None of the 103 outlets projecting the field ranked Maryland worse than a five-seed with a four-seed the overwhelming consensus pick.
Maryland returns to action on Friday at 6:30 PM EST against the winner of Illinois and Ohio State-Iowa. Maryland took down the Illini in the road in their lone matchup this season, while Maryland secured a 26-point home win against the Hawkeyes last month. Maryland and Ohio State split their two matchups this season with the home team winning each matchup.
“We have not been good coming off byes,” head coach Kevin Willard said after the Senior Day win vs. Northwestern. “Thanks a lot, appreciate it. I was going to go have a beer but now I’m going to switch to whiskey. Going out west was, we had four days off because of the New York trip so that was a really – and then going out west. And I thought we played pretty good going into Ohio State, we just missed our free throws. We would’ve won at Ohio State if we made our free throws. I think we’re going to take, technically, two days off but it won’t be a full two days. It’ll be like a day and a half.”
